Pastor's Perspective - Aug. 2009

Just a little over twenty-five years ago, I was
serving as associate pastor at First UMC in Great
Bend. We had handed out Bibles to third graders
on a Sunday in August. There was one family who
had not been in church for a long time, but we had
decided we would present a Bible to their third
grader anyway. And once again they did not show
up. So we asked in staff meeting, what do we do
with the Bible? It was decided I would deliver it to
their home.

So I showed up at their front door in a dress
shirt and tie carrying a Bible. I must have looked young and wet behind
the ears.
The mother opened the door and shouted, “We don’t want any!”
Then she slammed the door.
I had no intention of looking like a Jehovah’s Witness, Mormon, or
even a Bible salesman!
I thought it was rather amusing and lost no sleep over it. It was not a
career-changing event.
On the other hand, I have had the opportunity to work with so many
wonderful people during thirty years of ministry in the local church.
Maybe I’m showing my age, but in recent months, I have spent some time
reflecting upon and remembering some awesome folk. So many times, I
have sat down with a family to plan a funeral for one of their loved ones.
And I am so humbled just to be given the privilege of being a part of the
service.
I can understand how Paul must have felt when he wrote, “I thank my
God upon every remembrance of you” (Philippians 1:3). I feel the same
way about each of you. The greatest benefit of being a pastor is sharing
in the lives of people who are tremendous, fabulous, even
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
You are very important people. During the month of August, I will be
sharing a series called “VIP.” During each sermon I will be sharing lessons
I have learned from a Kansas native who in God’s eyes is a very important
person. It was hard to trim the list to five people. I thank God
for super people!
It’s pretty amazing to me that someone would retire from a difficult job here and then want to spend
five years overseas taking God’s love to a distant country. That someone is Louise Reimer. She has
raised a little over half of her needed funding for the five years. She needs your financial support to get
to Peru.
I am hoping to teach an eight-week Disciple Bible Study on Tuesday evenings
in the fall. Call the church office, if interested. I can’t wait to see you on Sunday
morning!
In Christ’s Love, Pastor Dan
